Celebrations in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is home to a variety of different religions and cultures that all celebrate different holidays and special occasions, one of them being “Three Kings Day”. Three king’s day is a celebration much like American Christmas, in which children leave out three gifts, candies, or something of value to them in a basket of hay. They leave out the gifts for the three kings who journeyed the deserts in search of messiah on his birth. The hay basket is represented for food the camels the three kings traveled on would eat. The morning after the children leave out of the gifts, the parents, or “Three Kings” would switch them out for three gifts the kids desired, like that of our Christmas. This celebration is more home to home and less a parade type celebration like most others, so costumes aren’t very prevalent on Three Kings Day, if there Is any costume, it would be people dressed up as a king.

January 20th is a special day for Puerto Ricans as it is the day of the San Sebastian street festival, however this year it is being celebrated on January 16th through the 19th. This festival is commemorating Saint Sebastian and normally celebrated by catholic believers in Puerto Rico. The San Sebastian festival is most like the American tradition and celebration of Mardi Gras. This celebration entails people dressing up in lively and colorful costumes and parading down the streets if San Juan.

The biggest celebration in Puerto Rico is the Carnival de Ponce, or the Carnaval Ponceño. This year this celebration took place on February 10th through the 16th. The celebration lasts an entire week and ends the day before Ash Wednesday. The celebration is to basically have one last bit of fun before the 40-day lent period before Easter. This celebration has gone on for more than 250 years and is still a gigantic part of the culture and something that is looked forward to by many.
