Introduction

Racism is still widely evident throughout the entire world, not only in America. It has many far-reaching tentacles which have existed for centuries. Not exempt from these tentacles, is the island country of Puerto Rico and its native people, the Taino. Its native peoples were systematically erased by European colonists and replaced by African slaves. Throughout the centuries, the slaves have remained and have bred with the those of different cultures and races. These mixed races are both a sign of progression as well as a continuing source of controversy, as they struggle to find their own identities.

Puerto Rico is a mid-sized island in the Caribbean region that is a mix of United states and afro Caribbean culture, making them very different than the other islands in culture and in language. The language mostly spoken here is Spanish with a slight mix in of English and English phrases. Puerto Ricans are known for speaking fast Spanish, my stepdad is Puerto Rican so whenever family would come, I had a less than zero percent chance of understanding or translating any type of conversation that was had. Surprising to me, during my research I found that the currency used is the US dollar, which is most likely obvious considering America funds them and they are a territory of ours, but I was still surprised reading that. Continuing with economy, Puerto Rico in previous years had one of the strongest economies in the Caribbean region, now things are a little different as most of their funding comes form America, but its still impressive none the less. The culture of Puerto R

Confusions of "El Caribe Gris"

Christopher Columbus     The problems I ran in to while trying to read and comprehend the text of "El Caribe Gris", or " The Gray Caribbean" was just understanding the main points, especially since the text is pretty lengthy and goes in multiple directions and doesn't really continue the same thought the whole way through.     However, it was slightly easier when we were given the shortened, to the point text of Caribe Gris, as it was more on the same topic instead of jumping around. Another problem is that it is translated, and through google translate at that, so some points are misinterpreted and recited different than they should be.         What i did to combat the hardships of this reading is i somewhat dissected  it, reading a small portion at a time, trying to understand  it, then continuing  on until it was finished so i could piece  the puzzle together.     I feel as though now that i have read the whole

Criteria i feel as though my blogs meet the criteria and definitely portray the correct point, however i do find myself having trouble with formatting my blogs and making them look unique. I can write and have no problems, but blogs are about expressing your creative ideas and i just have trouble ding that in a blog.  Stress I don't normally have a problem with writing and expressing my thoughts, but its just hard for me to add pictures and find the ones that i want to use. I'm used t expressing myself with words, not usually visuals added in like a power point. Effort My blogs and writings have my best effort, it would be a waste o time to work on these and not try, especially when I pay for my classes, it would just feel like a waste fir me to not express my ability to write. Work Ethic Normally i like to complete all of my homework for not just this class, but every class over the weekend. during the week i have my somewhat busy work schedule as well as the gym everyday bes

Haiti

Haiti Haiti is a Caribbean country in the island chain, closest to the Dominican Republic with its main language as Creole which is a french based language. Haiti was pretty early in the Caribbean island chain to gain their independence, which they obtained in 1804. Haiti has been conquered by a few countries, first by Christopher Columbus for Spain in 1492 when he "accidentally" came across it on the search for something else. Haiti was then conquered by France with slight British control in 1625 up until their Independence in 1804. The french conquering Haiti for so long is the reason the base of their language is french/ broken french.  Haiti was considered one of the first in the Caribbean island chain to gain their independence making them pretty self sufficient for some 200 years plus. This is good for them because it has given them time to figure things out and make the best of their government.  As Haiti was starting to get back on their feet, they got hit with a mas

Trinidad

Tri ni dad    Trinidad is a small island in the Caribbean island chain located near the upper eastern part of south america, giving it a Indian and Spanish flavor.  F oo d Since Trinidad is so close to the South American country Guyana, it is tied very strong in Indian culture making the foods a strong mix of the two. A lot of the cuisine in Trinidad consists of curries. My step mom being from Trinidad gave me a personal example of the foods they have to offer in Trinidad, and let me tell you, they are SPICY! This is an example of chicken curry, most meals are topped on a rice base to split the strong flavors of the spices added in the curry.  Culture and Language   Many find this surprising, as i did when i was first informed, but Trinidad was first conquered by the Spanish, but then taken over by the British in the late 1700's. That being said, the popular language on the island is English. This was funny to me because the people there are from a hot island with lots of melani
